Young lawmakers remain the exception as an older generation dominates US Congress

Almost all US voters, whichever party they back, agree their politicians are too old.

The median age of lawmakers at the US Capitol is 64 in the Senate and 57 in the House, well above the median age of the American population, which is 39.1 according to the census.

The US Constitution sets no maximum age for serving in Congress, but it sets minimums: 30 for a senator and 25 for a representative. Democrat Maxwell Frost was elected at 25 to represent Florida’s 10th district and is now 29. He said different messengers are needed to speak to young people, and he sees more of them getting involved in politics.

But young people holding power is still the exception on Capitol Hill, where the older generation dominates.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Zhou-Castro reports from Washington, DC.
