Yemen’s healthcare system is under increasing pressure as renewed fighting across several front lines sends more wounded patients to hospitals already struggling with severe funding shortages. At Al Gamhouria Hospital in Aden, one of the region’s main public healthcare facilities, doctors are treating war casualties alongside displaced people and low-income families who depend on the hospital for essential medical services. More than 60 wounded patients were admitted in the week following an escalation in fighting in September, many requiring emergency surgery and blood transfusions. The hospital also provides specialised treatment for patients with chronic bone infections, congenital deformities and bone cancer. Its director says the facility continues to operate on a budget unchanged since 2014, despite a dramatic decline in the Yemeni rial’s value. Funding once worth $5m is now equivalent to just $380,000 to $400,000, leaving medical supplies running low as demand increases. Healthcare workers warn that the worsening financial crisis threatens their ability to provide emergency treatment and routine care.
