Younger Americans feel that they don’t have a say in their country’s policies and future, argues Samuel Moyn, who teaches history and law at Yale University.
Moyn tells host Steve Clemons that the generational divide between old and young is widening, in the US and around the world. In the US, where protest is shunned and young politicians are not the norm, many people feel “my vote wouldn’t make a difference,” says Moyn.
With increasing lifespans comes an aging population, and power is “hoarded” by older, wealthier citizens – leading to gerontocracy (rule by elders) instead of democracy, Moyn explains.
