US midterms 2026: Is ICE still a Republican strength? | This Is America

US President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown is emerging as a major issue ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with growing public opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tactics challenging what has traditionally been a Republican political strength. While illegal border crossings have fallen, ICE arrests and deportations have increased, raising concerns about aggressive enforcement, detention practices and the treatment of immigrants. Polling cited in the programme suggests more than half of Americans believe immigration enforcement has gone too far, including six in ten independent and Hispanic voters. Republicans argue that securing the border must be accompanied by enforcement within the country, while Democrats are divided over whether ICE should be reformed or abolished.

So can Republicans maintain their advantage on immigration, or will opposition to ICE reshape the midterm elections?

Presenter:
Scott Mclean

Guests:
Mark Krikorian: Executive Director, Center for Immigration Studies

Scott Shuchart: Former Head of Policy at ICE
