Britain is trying to ease tensions between Washington and Kyiv after US President Donald Trump announced a controversial deal to buy Russian diesel and called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to be replaced. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed Britain’s support for Ukraine, while the government has criticised Washington’s agreement with Moscow. British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting says London has a responsibility to bring its allies together despite their disagreements. The dispute has renewed questions about the UK’s ability to maintain its close relationship with the United States while taking a tougher stance against Russia. Burnham has pledged to strengthen sanctions on Moscow and accused Russia of interfering in Britain’s Brexit referendum, highlighting the differences between Downing Street and the White House. With Trump pursuing a more conciliatory approach towards Russian President Vladimir Putin, the latest tensions could test Britain’s diplomatic influence and its relationship with Washington.
