The UK faces a growing energy dilemma as it balances plans for new North Sea oil and gas development with its commitment to transition to renewable energy. In the Shetland Islands, residents are struggling with rising heating costs, with pensioner Ian Smith describing how energy bills are outpacing his pension.
The approval of North Sea gas fields, including Jackdaw and Rosebank, has fuelled debate over the country’s energy future. Oil worker Andrew Hawick argues for using domestic resources during the transition, while Green councillor Alex Armitage calls for an immediate halt to fossil fuel extraction.
But increasing domestic production may not protect households from high energy bills, as prices remain exposed to international markets.
Al Jazeera’s Charlie Angela reports from the Shetland Islands.
