US President Donald Trump waived a further slate of sanctions related to Russian fossil fuel sales, sparking a bipartisan backlash days before they were to take effect under a bill he signed into law last month.
The waiver announced in an executive order comes as Trump increasingly feuds with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and cracks appear in Washington’s support for Kyiv in its yearslong war against its invading neighbor, deepening alarm among European allies.
CNN’s Kristen Holmes reports from the White House on Trump’s defense of his sanctions pause. Also, former US ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) offer their perspectives on the implications of easing sanctions on Russia.
