Al Jazeera senior political analyst Marwan Bishara analyses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the United Nations General Assembly and its implications for Israeli politics.

Bishara describes Netanyahu’s address as a performance aimed primarily at Israeli voters, arguing that his confrontational rhetoric towards international allies, including France and the UK, risked further alienating Israel diplomatically.

He examines the idea that “Netanyahu is Israel” and discusses the relationship between Netanyahu’s personal political position and public support for his government’s policies.

Bishara also looks ahead to Israel’s upcoming elections and considers whether a change in leadership, including a possible figure such as General Eisenkot, would alter Israel’s approach to the occupation and conflicts in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.
