As world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Inside Latin America looks at the UN from a Latin American perspective.

From peacekeeping and political crises to hunger, migration and development, the United Nations has played a major role across the region for decades.

This year, several candidates from Latin America are competing to replace Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez, amid calls for the next Secretary-General to come from Latin America — and for the first woman to lead the organisation. This is a critical moment for the organisation, as the UN faces major budget and staffing cuts just as humanitarian needs, migration, organised crime, and climate emergencies put increasing demands on its agencies.

Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Santiago, Chile, with Teresa Bo.
