Residents and business owners in Rennes, France, are assessing the damage after overnight looting and vandalism, as tensions continue following President Emmanuel Macron’s address to the nation.

Al Jazeera’s Rosie Birchard reports from Rennes, where a marathon is taking place amid debris and smashed storefronts. Cafe owner Charles Thibaudeau describes the destruction as “useless”, questioning the message behind the damage.

Seriket Rayyan, representing the Student Union Federation, criticises Macron’s speech for focusing on support for police while failing to address concerns about living conditions and education. She says faith in the government has declined and argues that its policies prioritise economic interests over the needs of the French public.

The report examines the continuing tensions between protesters, including members of the Yellow Vest movement, and the French state following a weekend of nationwide unrest.
