Violent clashes between protesters and riot police have erupted in Paris as unrest spreads across France, leaving businesses and public buildings damaged in several cities.

Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler reports from Place de la République, where demonstrations over the cost of living escalated into scuffles and police used tear gas. Residents describe fear and uncertainty, while business owner Alberto Carvalho calls the aftermath “hell”.

In Limoges, City Hall was set on fire. Mayor Guillaume Guerin criticised the lack of resources available to protect the building as the city dealt with the destruction.

French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the nation, expressing support for affected shopkeepers and promising that the government will not leave business owners to face the consequences alone.

As cleanup efforts begin in Rennes following overnight violence, questions remain over how the government will address public grievances, support affected communities and restore calm.
