Since October 2023, hundreds of thousands of people have joined demonstrations in London against Israel’s war on Gaza, including British Jews who say their religious and cultural identity compels them to speak out against Israeli policies. Mike Cushman, an officer of Jewish Voice for Labour, helps organise Jewish participation in the protests, with hundreds and sometimes thousands marching to demand an end to what they describe as genocide in Gaza and a halt to British arms sales to Israel. Cushman reflects on his Jewish identity and his rejection of Zionism, arguing that being Jewish, Israeli and Zionist are distinct concepts. He says Jewish protesters have a particular responsibility to oppose Israeli actions carried out in their name. Looking ahead to Israel’s elections, Cushman expresses little hope for a change in policies towards Palestinians but believes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could face greater accountability over corruption allegations. Despite the continuing demonstrations, Cushman acknowledges the difficulty of finding a solution to the conflict.
