US President Donald Trump has met cryptocurrency executives, Wall Street leaders and federal regulators as he pushes to make the US a global centre for digital assets. Trump and the crypto industry are urging Congress to pass the Clarity Act, which would establish a broader regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. The legislation faces criticism from Democrats over consumer protection and potential conflicts of interest, after financial disclosures showed Trump made about $1.4bn from his family’s cryptocurrency ventures. Trump and the White House reject allegations of impropriety. SEC Chairman Paul Atkins also outlined new rules aimed at giving crypto companies a clearer path to raise money while easing some securities requirements. The meeting comes as cryptocurrency becomes increasingly linked to geopolitics, with the US accusing Iran of using crypto networks to evade sanctions.

Al Jazeera’s Matthew Torres reports from Washington.
