The UN says around 200,000 people have been displaced by fighting in Sudan’s Kordofan region since late last year, as drone attacks target critical water and electricity infrastructure.
The Sudanese army has reopened a highway linking the capital Khartoum with el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, providing a faster supply route to a city that has endured one of the war’s longest sieges.
But the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) still hold positions south and west of el-Obeid and continue attacking nearby villages, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
The city is also absorbing thousands of people fleeing the fighting, with Save the Children saying nearly 39,000 children arrived there in the first six months of this year. More than 605,000 people are now living in el-Obeid and Sheikhan locality.

Al Jazeera’s Almigdad Alruhaid reports from North Kordofan state.
