Wildfires in Indonesia are fuelling toxic haze, prompting protests and legal action against the government over its response to the crisis. Residents and activists are demanding more resources, medical care for affected communities and the prosecution of those responsible for illegal land clearing.
The government has suspended permits for 32 companies amid growing pressure to address the fires. Meanwhile, wildlife rehabilitation centres are rescuing displaced orangutans affected by the destruction of their habitats.
The protests and lawsuits highlight growing demands for stronger action to protect public health, forests and wildlife from recurring fires.
