US President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s scheduled October 2026 elections, highlighting their partnership and shared campaign against Iran.
Netanyahu has pointed to what he describes as their success in “crushing” the Iranian axis as a reason to continue working together. But analysts Patty Culhane, Negar Mortazavi and Alan Eyre examine the complexities of the alliance, including the conflict’s unpopularity among parts of the US public and Trump’s emphasis on personal relationships and political legacy in foreign policy.
The report also looks at tensions within Israel, where protesters in Tel Aviv have demonstrated against National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir as his party reportedly gains ground in opinion polls.
With the election approaching, the relationship between Washington and Jerusalem, the war with Iran and Israel’s domestic political divisions are emerging as key issues in the campaign.
