US President Donald Trump has formally endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s October 27 general election, describing him as a key partner in confronting Iran and warning against electing another leader. The endorsement comes as Netanyahu faces growing pressure over security failures surrounding the October 7, 2023 attacks and calls for an independent investigation. Trump’s intervention could strengthen Netanyahu’s support among right-wing voters while complicating the opposition’s efforts to challenge him.
Shanna Fuld, CEO and anchor of the Israel Daily News podcast, says the endorsement could also influence former Netanyahu supporters who are considering voting for other candidates. She adds that security, accountability for October 7 and military service requirements for ultra-Orthodox Israelis are among the key election issues.
