Fears of an all-out Ethiopia-Eritrea war as Tigray conflict escalates

There are fears of a return to all-out war between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Addis Ababa accuses its neighbour of backing an opposition alliance seeking to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. Asmara has denied the allegations, but witnesses and monitoring groups report seeing Eritrean soldiers on the ground in the Tigray region.

In late September, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and six other rebel groups launched an offensive in Tigray, Afar and Amhara. Federal government troops and allied fighters struck back in early October, retaking Mekelle, Adigrat and Aksum. This week, the monitor ACLED reported that Eritrean soldiers withdrew across the border at Zalambessa as Ethiopian troops advanced.

The US is urging de-escalation, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio calling on all parties to return to the 2018 peace framework. That deal, signed in Jeddah, ended a 20-year state of war.

Al Jazeera’s Michael Appel reports.
