Almost all US voters, regardless of party, agree on one thing: their politicians are too old. President Donald Trump turned 80 earlier this year.

More than two dozen members of Congress are now over 80, and roughly a quarter are 70 or older. Three of the ten oldest politicians have served since 1981. The median age of an American is 39.

Voters Al Jazeera spoke to in Washington, DC, said age brings physical and mental limits, and that term limits or age limits would keep politicians motivated.

Many other developed countries have neither, yet their legislators are younger on average. The US House of Representatives averages 57.9, compared with 45.4 in Germany’s Bundestag and 49.2 in the UK’s House of Commons.

Al Jazeera’s John Holman reports from Washington, DC.
