The newest White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia, has left her post after only five days on the job.
Asked whether she was fired or had resigned, a White House official told Al Jazeera she was “transitioning out” of the job.
Her departure follows heavy criticism after her first briefing on Monday, and the revelation that she misstated her academic credentials.
Standing behind US President Donald Trump, Zacharia implied she had passed the bar exam and qualified as an attorney while living in China with her husband. Closer investigation revealed that, although she obtained a law degree, she failed the one attempt she made at passing the bar exam.
On Friday, Trump said: “Maybe it’s not for her, but I said you want to be happy in life, I’ll do whatever she wants.”
In 2017, Anthony Scaramucci lasted 11 days as White House communications director before he “transitioned out”. Zacharia’s term lasted five days.
Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna reports from Washington, DC.
