Almost eight years after the Yellow Vest movement swept France, some are calling for its revival as the country prepares for more nationwide demonstrations on Saturday. They want the government to do more to help with the cost of living.
Al Jazeera’s Natacha Butler says Saint-Denis Mayor Bally Bagayoko, of the left-wing France Unbowed party, stepped between students and riot police at a recent Paris demonstration. The high school protests that have shaken France for nearly a month began in Saint-Denis. He says the response to the students cannot come from the police; it must be political.
As the cost of living rises, more people say they are struggling. Butler says it is a difficult balancing act for the government. France’s ballooning debt means ministers are trying to curb spending just as some want more financial help. After being caught off guard by the student protests, they will want to prevent a revival of Yellow Vest-era scenes.
