Sudan’s Nile River levels fall as farmers struggle amid food crisis

Sudan’s farmers are struggling with unusually low Nile River water levels during the rainy season, as changing climate conditions and ongoing conflict put further pressure on food production.

In Khartoum, farmers Idris Bashir and Eltayeb Mohammed describe the growing physical and financial burden of irrigating their crops as the river recedes. Without the natural flooding that helps replenish farmland, they face higher costs for water, fertilisers and pesticides.

The United Nations warns that environmental pressures are worsening food insecurity for millions of people already affected by Sudan’s war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The report also examines concerns about the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its potential impact on downstream water availability, amid wider regional debate over the Nile’s resources.

As farmers struggle to sustain production, declining water availability threatens livelihoods and adds to the challenges facing Sudan’s food supply.

Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reports from Khartoum.
