US warns Americans in Saudi Arabia after Houthi attacks on two airports

The United States has issued a fresh security warning to its citizens in Saudi Arabia amid Houthi threats against airports and airspace across the country. The US Mission in Saudi Arabia urged Americans to exercise heightened vigilance and advised those with flights to or from the kingdom to check with their airlines and prepare for possible travel disruptions. The warning comes after attacks targeted Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, with Saudi authorities reporting at least three people killed and 36 injured. The attacks have raised concerns over the safety of civilian air travel and Saudi airspace as fighting intensifies between Houthi forces and Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces. US officials stopped short of ordering Americans to leave Saudi Arabia or withdrawing non-essential personnel, but described the latest guidance as an escalation in concern. The existing US State Department travel advisory places Saudi Arabia at Level 3, urging Americans to reconsider travel because of risks including missile and drone attacks.

Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports from the White House.
