The US has sent a questionnaire to NATO’s 32 members asking about their alignment with Washington’s foreign policy, defence spending commitments and restrictions on US military access to bases and airspace. The document asks whether allies have a credible path towards spending five percent of GDP on defence and whether they support the Trump administration’s “NATO 3.0” concept, which calls for European allies to take greater responsibility for their own defence with more limited US support. It also asks whether countries are willing to reduce restrictions on US military access, an issue that has become contentious during the war with Iran. The questionnaire comes as the Pentagon conducts a six-month review of US forces in Europe and allies brace for possible reductions in American troops and military assets. A senior European official told Al Jazeera the document could help build a case for reducing the US military presence in Europe.
